FOR his role in the impeachment of his deputy, Mr. Femi Pedro, Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, has been described as being intolerant to the view of the opposition. The Labour Party (LP), on which platform Pedro vied for the Lagos State number one seat, also carpeted Tinubu over what it called his "autocratic and dictatorial tendencies."
The political party, in a statement by its National Chairman, Mr. Dan Nwanyanwu, also declared that the purported impeachment of Pedro could not stand, describing it as an exercise in futility and "akin to beating a dead horse." He insisted that the purported impeachment violated all known rules including Section 188 (1-b) of the 1999 Constitution, which stipulated personal service of the impeachment notice on the holder of the office affected and to each member of the Assembly, which the Lagos House allegedly failed to comply with. "Neither did they serve Pedro personally nor did they serve each member personally. Rather, the so-called honourable members got themselves involved in forgery to justify their ill-motivated actions," the LP chief added. Nwanyanwu observed that Pedro travelled out of the country on April 23, while the impeachment notice was dated April 24, regretting that the legislators, on noticing that Femi Pedro had travelled, backdated the letter to April 23. "We have in our possession the notice dated 24th April 2007. If the notice of impeachment is dated 24th April and Pedro travelled on 23rd, where did the State Assembly serve him overseas?" he queried. The statement read in part: "It is unfortunate that Governor Bola Tinubu, the self-acclaimed democrat, could support and fund such illegality at the twilight of his administration. It has gone to show that Tinubu is intolerant to opposition views and will be worse than those he has been fighting in the last eight years. It has also confirmed that Tinubu could have stifled life out of opposition in his country if he were President." It continued: " The relationship between him and Pedro between November 2006 and April 2007 cannot be compared by any scale or measure with what transpired between him (Tinubu) and President Obasanjo, whom he had called all sorts of names for eight years without respect to the office of the President. "It has reconfirmed that if President Obasanjo is averse to criticism, then Tinubu is far worse in any material. At no time did Obasanjo contemplate sponsoring his impeachment, which he (Obasanjo) could have achieved with Federal Might," the statement added. The Labour Party chairman however noted that even when Pedro resigned his appointment, Tinubu pretended as if it did not exist and directed that no worker in his office should collect the resignation letter. His words: "It is not only despicable but shameful that political leaders we look up to for national leadership have failed us and did not deserve their positions. "The Centre of Excellence, which Lagos is noted for, has suddenly become a place of gangsterism, executive and legislative lawlessness, since the purported impeachment was aimed at getting back at Otunba Pedro for daring to contest the Governorship of Lagos State under another political party other than Action Congress, as vendetta for standing by the truth against the rigged elections in Lagos by Action Congress." |
